Happier, more present, and more resilient

Curtis Jordan, Maryland, US

My name is Curtis Jordan and I live in Ellicott City, Maryland in the United States. I was born in Frankfurt Germany and have lived in both the US and in South Korea for a couple of years. I joined Jungto in 2016 after reconnecting with an old friend that helped me reengage with meditation practice. I had taken a trip to South Carolina for a meditation retreat and I enjoyed the experience so much that I wanted to find a local Sangha. After returning home from my trip, I found some of Sunim's videos on YouTube and one in particular, the video "How Can I Forgive My Mother?"(click - go to YouTube) really resonated with me. There was a lot of compassion and wisdom in Sunim's answer that helped me as much as it seemed to help the young lady he was speaking to. Out of curiosity I looked at the Jungto website and found that one of the Jungto centers (DC) was only 25 minutes from my home. I was overjoyed. Everything is done in Korean there and while my Korean language skills are very little, I can read Hangul well enough that I can do the chants and songs with everyone and I found that the people there were very kind and welcoming. Unfortunately, Jungto DC does not have an English program and I haven't been able to make the drive down to Virginia to attend any of the English language programs there.

I began practicing meditation as a teenager probably around 1998 or 1999, but my practice was unskilled and inconsistent. In 2015, with the help of an old Army friend, I started practicing much more consistently and skillfully in a way that I could finally say that I was properly a meditation novice. I began practice because my life had a lot of sadness and hardships and I didn't know what to do to fix it. Some of it was caused by circumstance and people that I chose to have in my life, but I didn't realize how much of my suffering was caused by my own thinking and the resulting actions of such thinking. Mediation and Sunim's teachings have made me happier, more present, and more resilient in the face of life's challenges. I find that if I exercise, meditate, and get enough sleep each day my life has unbelievable balance and peace. I love Pomnyun Sunim's Dharma talks and I am very grateful to the translation team that makes them available for English speakers. Sunim has some core tenants from which he is able to answer nearly any question about life. His talks tend to have a wonderful balance of wisdom and humor that makes his message very easy to understand and embrace. It also makes it very obvious that Sunim really wants people to be happy.

For the social distancing Sangha meditation each Sunday I wake up 30 minutes before meditation and I am excited about having this regular meditation time again. I find that my practice is enhanced by the Q&A Sunim does before the meditation because sometimes there are things that I do subconsciously or that I hadn't thought to ask before and so my practice has improved every week we have done this. After the meditation, it is truly amazing and heart-warming to have a sharing group that speaks English. I didn't realize how much I was missing out on when sitting with my Korean group as my Korean language skill is very, very poor. Being able to meditate from home with people all around the world also feels very enriching. Of course, meditating from home means that sometimes my children or the dog can interrupt my sessions, but this usually isn't a problem.

During meditation, I find that my mind tends to lean towards creative ideas and solutions to problems and while they are sometimes nice, they distract me from the breath. I have learned to be gentle with myself though and simply note the thoughts that arise and return to the breath. Sometimes these thoughts and ideas only happen a few times during meditation and other times it seems to be all I do for the whole meditation session, lol!

Having this online meditation has been nice because I'd gotten away from regular mediation due to recent challenges so the first improvement I received was again having a regular time to practice. I find that having this time each Sunday ensures that I meditate at least 4 or 5 times each week because my week starts out so well. It makes me feel a little more peaceful and able to deal with stressful moments with more kindness and equanimity.

This has all been VERY helpful to me during Covid19. In the sharing group, the thing I have heard over and over is, "I hope this continues even longer," or "I hope these will be available to use for everyday practice after the 7 weeks is done," and I agree with those sentiments. It's really nice having an anchor point of peace, sharing and fellowship, an online Sangha, in troubling times such as Covid19.

Time to gain new insights

KevinO'Sullivan, Dublin, Ireland

I am Kevin O'Sullivan from Ireland, living near Dublin and I've been involved with Jungto for about 7 years. The reason why I got involved initially was because I seriously injured my back and while looking for a way to fix it, without the surgery advised by my doctor, was recommended Buddhist bowing by someone as being good for the back. My wife looked for a way to bow properly and found a video by PomnyunSunim called “I hate doing 108 bows”. This was the start and we have been involved ever since.Together with my wife, we traveled first to the Dusseldorf Jungto every 100 days, then joined the London Jungto for a good few years, before recently being able to have the Dublin Jungto in our home.

Meditation has never been something I particularly enjoyed doing but perhaps never really did it properly. When the online meditation was suggested to me, I saw it as a great chance to learn in more depth and concentrate on it. I was delighted that it was made accessible to foreigners with the translation accompanying it. For the last six weeks or so, Ireland has been in a state of lockdown with many restrictions in place because of Covid-19. I am really one of the lucky ones, being able to work from home, and also living in the countryside with space to move and plenty of work to do. I think my wife knew, from following all the Korean news, what was coming as the wave approached Ireland, so we were prepared for it. I feel grateful all the time, not just for how lucky my situation is but also all the people on the front line, keeping the country going. All the extra free time leaves plenty of opportunity and the London and Dublin Jungto have been holding regular meetings, whether it's 300 bows or a book club etc., its left time to reflect and think. Perfect timing for the meditation sessions to come along.

In Irish time, the meditation starts at 12:30pm, so a great time of the day really. I look at some of the other foreigners taking part from the US and during the sharing sessions afterwards I can see they have had to get up in the early hours of the morning which really shows their dedication. Over the four weeks of my practice it has been a bit up and down, finding myself struggling a bit to focus one week before really enjoying the latest week. It is not about whether I do well or not but I am starting to understand more and not see it perhaps as a chore which I might once have done. Each week the introductions by PomnyunSunim have helped me concentrate and focus with more of an understanding. The questions answered before and after having been great. A few times, a question has popped into my head and just as it does, PomnyunSunim answers it on the screen, as if he had a bugging device in the room. Some things that people ask, I am really interested in and can see how they affect me directly but perhaps never occurred to me, so from that side it’s a great help as well.

As someone who played rugby for over twenty years, grew up in Ireland on chairs, had a bad back and never did any yoga, the cross legged position has never been really possible for me but, through trial and error, have managed to find a position which I can do while keeping my back straight. Itis relatively quiet in our room while we meditate. One week I felt focused meditating on my cushion next to my wife, when I felt my dog scratch my leg, something she does in order to get me to pet her. I thought, OK good, this is excellent practice, will make me stronger if I can ignore it and focus on my breath. While I continued to focus on my breath I noticed after a while that my focus had been diverted from my breath and was actually on the dog's breath who had fallen asleep at my legs and was snoring loudly. All good practice.

I normally watch the YouTube meditation together with my wife and we each then go off to our own sharing sessions, hers in Korean and mine in English, which is amazing. For me it would normally be done with just Koreans, occasionally some other non-Koreans, and I would only get to understand bits and pieces that I picked up. Now I am doing it with English speakers and getting really interesting insights from their thinking which helps provoke an internal discussion within my own mind later in the day.
I find myself trying to concentrate on my breath during the day at times occasionally now and have definitely learnt a lot from it so it’s a great foundation I can hopefully build on and continue. I'm really grateful to PomnyunSunim, translator Jason but also the many utterly amazing people who have helped organize this and the sharing sessions etc. There are so many people working so hard to help others like me. Thank you.
